This formula can be used to take a max load and calculate a reduced load based on the velocity you want to achieve. For example you have a classic 45 Colt load of 10.0 gr of Unique over a 260gr bullet @ 1000fps, but you want something around 850 fps. Plug in 10, 1000, 850 into the fields and you'll get 8.2 as the load you should use to get approximatly 850fps using that powder. Alliant lists 8.0gr of Unique for 850 fps.

I compared the results of this formula to handgun data in several published loading manuals, in no cases was the calculated result off by more than 1.0 grains, in 90% of the cases it was off by 0.5gr or less and in most cases the predicted powder charge was less than what was published.

I'm sure someone out there is thinking that you could reverse the formula and figure out loads the other direction too. Maybe, but there would be no way to know when you've exceeded the max load and have gotten into dangerous or deadly territory, so I won't build a calculator that solves for that solution.
