I'm a 45 Colt Guy but I had a bug to get a 480. Any hunting loads would be great for a starter. Thanks Jeff My Rugers 9 1/2 inch barrel. |

Posted by: FlintDate: 11/14/2003 9:47:27 AM Posts: 127 | Hey Jeff, welcome to the forum. I don't have a .480, but came close awhile back. When I decided to get something bigger than my .44 mag, I debated between the .454 Casull and the 480 Ruger. Ended up choosing the .454, mostly because I was also interested in shooting the .45 Colt. So now I have both. I'd be very interested to hear about your experiences with your Ruger...I still haven't discounted the idea of one day getting a .480! Flint |

One word of advice is if your using factory ammo use the Hornady with the Speer ammo I couldn't hit a barn from the inside! |

| In other calibers I've found that Lil'Gun generally works best with bullets that are heavy for the caliber. In the 480 I'd try Lil'Gun with the 325's and 370's but I'd expect H110 to work better, but once you get over 400gr I think Lil'Gun would start to out perform H110.
I'd start around 24.0 gr of Lil'Gun under that 375gr and work up towards the max listed by Hodgdon of 26.0. |

Posted by: BamaDate: 11/30/2003 3:38:59 PM Posts: 11 | Tried the RCBS 400 gr SWC and 17 gr. of 2400. I haven't got the elevation where I want it, so it hasn't been hunting with me yet. For my son I load 25 gr. of H110 and a 325 gr, jacketed bullet. He's had the time to get his sighted in properly, and that load is vert accurate from his 9 1/2 inch SRH. |

Posted by: jcdflintDate: 12/10/2003 7:46:47 AM Posts: 13 | Thanks for the reply's. I love shooting it. Some of the heavy bullets shoot high and I can't lower the rear sight anymore. I picked up a Millett red dot. and will put it on soon. I like open sights better but my eyes , at age 50, just is not the same as they use to be. We are doing a hog hunt here in South Eastern ,Ohio in March. If any of you 480 Shooters would like to hunt, Let Me know. Its $250.00 if you shoot a hog. Thanks ,Jeff

| Depending on which data you look at maytom, and how you want to measure power the 480 can be more powerfull than the 454 Casull. Take Hodgdons data for a 405 gr LFN bullet. If we believe their velocity claims that load actually has more momentum and a higher TKO than a hot 454 Casull load, the Casull does have more energy however.
If you like big heavy bullets I don't think you'll go wrong with the 480, and for hunting I don't think there's anything you can take with a 454 that you can't with a 480, or vice versa.
Anyone want to trade a 480 Ruger for a 3" GP100? |

Posted by: BamaDate: 12/10/2003 7:58:17 PM Posts: 11 | My son shot three hogs over Thanksgiving weekend with the 325 gr. Hornaday XTP's and 25 gr. of H110 that I loaded up for him. One shot for each hog. He said one was a small one , about 100 lbs, one was just a bit bigger, and the last one was huge... in the neighborhood of 500 pounds or more. |
