Handloads.Com ForumGeneral DiscussionWife wants to buy me a gun
What should I get?

Definately not a new wife, she's a keeper!

You don't mention a budget, so I'll assume something realistic and not some $3,000 custom Bowen revolver. I would get a 7.5" Ruger Super Redhawk for heavy 44 Mag shooting. Right now my 44's are older Smiths that I don't want to beat up with heavy loads. Or maybe a 480 SRH because I want one to experiment with.

If the budget is smaller than that I'd look for a Security Six, just because I want one, or a 4" M27 or 28.

And welcome back Rod.

Thanks, John, she's a really great wife!

Budget isn't unlimited, but very liberal.

Full size stainless Springfield 1911 with adjustable sights? That'd do it for me.

S+W 1911, it is supposed to be a great gun. Then go out and by the little women some flowers.

Don,

Those are both good ideas!

I was thinking about this one the way home and came up with another one that would be good, especially if this is kind of "windfall" money. I'd go for a Quiggly Sharps, but in 45-70 since brass and loaddata is easier to find.

I looked (again) at one of those today in the Cabela's catalog. It intrigues me, but I'm afraid I'd want a .45-70 capable of handling higher pressures. That's a catch-22 situation because one of the guns I'm considering is a Marlin Guide Gun, a stainless. However, with that short barrel, even the mid-level .45-70 loads don't produce much, if any, more velocity than the longer barreled, but lower pressure, single shots such as you suggest. A Rem. rolling block replica appeals also.

So I considered instead the BAR in .338 Win mag. But that thing weighs nearly 8 1/2 lbs. before it's scoped!

There are currently other candidates, but I'm by no means settled on anything.

Rod,

My thoughts are leaning toward a NEF Handi Rifle. The extra barrels are about $75 each and you can have a whole host of guns for the price of a single Sharps. Granted it isn't very glamorous, but it is versatile!

ruger no1 405 wcf. might be a choice if you want big bore and something with a little class.
The most expensive bullet there is ain’t worth a plug nickel if it don’t go where its supposed to.
Ranch, hummm...I didn't know the #1 was being made in 405 Win. That's interesting and I can't rule a #1 out.

Paul, that Handi-Rifle thing has real merit and I've already considered it. I haven't ruled it out, but the things just need so much fooling with: sending the rifle back for the barrel fitting work, etc.. I don't like to buy a new gun and then have to have it worked on. And there is that "looks" thing! I'm not really shallow and have some ugly guns, but this time I'd like something more appealing.

In addition to the above guns, these are some that I have been/am looking at:

Sharps replicas
Marlin stainless GG
Marlin .45 Colt
Puma stainless 454
Smith 329
Rem. rolling block replica
AWA Lightning pump replica
Freedom Arms sixgun

Logic says I should buy a good shotgun since I don't have anything better than "utility" grade guns, but I don't shoot trap, skeet, or clays and haven't any place to hunt birds anymore, so I don't think I'll do that.

Also, I don't own a real heavy hitting hunting rifle. I considered a BAR in .338 Win Mag, but the weight puts me off (8 lobs plus without scope, etc.).

I really like the looks of the Lightning repro, but I detest buckhorn sights and I doubt it could hold up to any heavy loads to speak of. I have other rifles to shoot heavier pistol loads from, so that leaves the sight issue. (A pard has some original Colt Lightnings and they are nice.)

I'm very much undecided and waiting for something to really bowl me over, I guess.

Yup they sure are putting the 405 in the No.1. I was just about to order one when I found the 95. Loaded in that No.1 the 405 could become a true monster masher.

Once again, I think I would follow John's lead. Either a .45-70 Sharps or a Rolling Block. Always wanted one of those two...or both, but I usually end up with another handgun. Such hard decisions...what's a feller to do?

Win Lotto and buy them all.

I've found that making a list of wants doesn't really help me much, I keep shifting the order.

Whats a fella to do? Get some of the remodeling and other dumb honeydoo stuff done seems to help around here occasionally? Failing that John's lottery idea ain't bad.
