This is a fine hunting load for the .357 Maximum revolver. The 1612 f.p.s velocity I’ve posted is from my Dan Wesson M40-V8S. I’ve noted that with a firm friction fit, a relatively stiff roll crimp, and the Remington 7&1/2 small rifle bench rest primers that this particular bullet and powder charge combination gives extremely low standard deviations of velocity. Extreme spread for 6 shots was 10 feet per second. Also, the load is not temperature sensative, perhaps mostly due to the Hodgdon "Extreme" nature of H4227. In wet newsprint test I’ve run, the Hornady 158 grain XTPHP penetrates deep with high weight retention at this velocity level. Expansion is rapid early on in the bullet’s track and then controlled for a measured final frontal area. This is likely a good whitetail load for .357 Maximum revolvers being used for more than IHMSA competition. I’ll just note here that the cartridge deserves more attention as a hunting tool, in revolvers or single shots. In truth, it is very effective on deer and hogs and hunters would be hard pressed to distinguish the inflicted wounds of a deer hit with a .41 or .44 Magnum and a .357 Maximum.

Hodgdon’s LIL’GUN offers impressive velocities in the .357s, both the standard magnum and the Maximum. Velocity for the 23 grain charge listed is from an 8 inch barreled Dan Wesson .357 Maximum. LIL’GUN offers the highest velocities possible in the .357 Maximum revolver. Also, it is far-less temp. finicky than H110 and WW 296, though perhaps not as much so as H4227. For developing .357 Maximum hunting loads, Hodgdon’s LIL’GUN is a good component to begin the task. Remington 7&1/2 primers and RP brass were used. This load is hot (though slighly below listed max.), so work up to it carefully. A great whitetail load.

I use jacketed round nose bullets, either Hornady 200gr. or Remington bulk bullets. I shoot them in a 14" Contender and groups are around 1" at 100 yards.

Very accurate bullet. Shoots well in both my 10 inch Contender and 8 inch Dan Wesson. Velocity drops to 1280-1300 in the revolver.
